Hydraulic hose crimpers come in all different sizes, performance capabilities and cycle times. They range from simple, portable, handheld devices that are designed for piecework to sophisticated, sometimes automated, benchtop, work cell, or freestanding.

When comparing crimpers there are many factors to consider. Most hose crimpers are specified according to the manufacturer, hose style, hose I.D. and coupling style. Crimp force and maximum crimp are also important to consider.

Additional parameters for hose crimpers include dies, die ring, crimp diameter, crimp length, and hose insertion. Powered crimping machines differ in terms of physical dimensions such as height, depth, and width; standards-based capabilities; and set-up time and full cycle time. Keep in mind, cycle times for any crimper varies with hose and fitting styles and sizes.

Since a hydraulic hose crimper comes at a high price, it is important to make the right decision. First, you need to ask yourself a few questions:

  • Do you want a portable or shop style crimper?

  • What size hose do you expect to fabricate?

  • Do you require four wire or six wire hose?

  • If you are needing a portable crimper, would you prefer a hand pump operated or air powered unit?

Then consider:

  • Ease of operation

  • Durability

  • Crimper design

  • Die design

How does crimper functionality differ among manufacturers?

The end result for all crimpers is virtually the same; however, the crimping methods do differ among manufacturers. One way crimpers differ is whether or not the crimper has a positive stop or is preprogrammed.

A crimper that has a positive stop means that if you have the right die and die ring to match your hose and hose end, the crimper will bottom out once you have a good crimp. There are also programmable crimpers that have data inputted in the crimper to match your die, die ring, hose and hose end. Additionally, the crimper stops automatically after you have a good crimp. You should pay special attention to the manufacturer’s design of the hydraulic hose crimper. When you go for a bottom-loaded design, you can be sure that handling the crimper will be easier than ever. For instance, Parker hose crimper's bottom-loading operation makes it easy to handle long hose assemblies. Another difference among manufacturers is die design. The dies of the hydraulic hose crimper need special attention. The dies should be linked so that segments do not part away from each other. It is important to prevent misplacing of individual parts of the crimper.

Choosing an industry-leading crimper

Parker’s Parkrimp® System continues to lead the industry in ease of use, accuracy, and effectiveness. The system reliably crimps fittings to the proper diameter, so fluid power professionals no longer have to waste valuable time dialing variable settings that can produce mis-crimps. The Parkrimp System produces accurate crimps from the first time it’s used, and Parkrimp System crimpers require no calibration and continuously produce proper crimps, time after time.

Parker’s Parkrimp System provides users with several key advantages:

  • Perfect alignment: Parker’s exclusive Parkalign™ system features a positive-stop design that positions the fitting in the die for a perfect crimp every time. Parkalign benefits operators by enabling them to "feel" that the hose is in the right position to be crimped, as compared to "eyeballing" the proper position of the fitting in a variable crimper.

  • Efficient design: Bottom-loading Parkrimp crimpers make it much easier for operators to manage long hose assemblies.

  • Linked dies: Parkrimp dies are linked together to prevent segments from being misplaced or worse, mismatched.

  • Color-coded dies: Parkrimp dies are color coded by size, making identification easy and reducing set-up time.

  • Durability: Since they were introduced in 1980, Parkrimp crimpers have been designed and manufactured to provide years of reliable service.

  • Decals: Parkrimp crimpers come with an information-rich decal that provides the list of proper hose and fitting combinations, tools required and the crimp specification for each hose and fitting combination.
